Eagle Nebula - Oil - 48" x 48" - $4,000

Visual artists are all about creating and fostering the magic of illusion. That is what we do.  We take a one dimensional surface and give it dimension.  Some do this better than others but we all try our best to create this ‘magic’.

Although this photo taken of my painting, shown above is of poor quality, I wanted to include it in this post as it is the best example I have of successful illusion.  We tried and tried to get a good reproduction of the painting but without success.  For some reason this painting  just did not want to have it’s picture taken.  However, it is an example of my very best ‘magic’.  My favourite comment that I have received with this painting is “when you look at it you would swear you are looking out into space”.  Can’t get much better than that.

The dictionary definition of illusion is as follows :  a physical, sensuous perception which conveys an impression other than true of what is perceived;  any visual image or other sensuous impression which misleads (optical illusion);  illusion of the senses; distant view of water which travellers in the desert fancy they see when none is there.

The magic of illusion is not limited to the visual artist, it is what life is made of. Do you remember Joni Mitchell’s tune”Life’s illusions I recall, I really don’t know life at all”.  In that tune Joni touches on how one perceives their reality and how different that perception can be from the ‘facts’.    Artists, magicians, musicians, mathematicians, movie makers,  all show us just how easy it is to manipulate the senses.  I often wonder if anything we see or experience is truly what is.  There have been movies like the Matrix that have tried to nudge us along, tried to suggest that maybe the ‘reality’ we create is not exactly as it seems.  And, create it we do, reality that is.  After all, our mind’s perception is all we have.  Each moment we experience the creation from the past moment.  These moments strung together fulfill a second, minute, hour, day, week, year, a lifetime.  If, the doctrine that the external world exists entirely and only in illusions of the senses, than it behooves us to direct these ‘illusions’ towards love, peace, compassion, productivity and the belief that there is always enough for everyone.

Merry Christmas to those who celebrate the event and the Best of the Season to those that just celebrate life!
